The All new Ford Capri. Guess what... we don't hate it.

Ford introduced the Capri over half a century ago, to a European market aching for the kind of affordable glitz and glamour offered up by American muscle cars of the time. It was an overnight hit, and five decades later the automotive giant thinks the hallowed Ford Capri nameplate can be revived as an electric coupe-SUV to find sales success once again. The new Ford Capri made its UK debut at this years Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024.

It's the name that bothers us.

The looks are simply contemporary, modern and does look slightly different to other SUVs our in the market like the Nissans, Vauhalls Whand Volkswagens but at the end of the day it doesn't look like the ford Capri and please Ford, why use this iconic name for something that is so far away from the orginal. The Capri was built as an European muscle car — a fastback coupe with power. If you want to bring back an iconic name, do it properly like other brands / models.

In all honesty, the car is good looking, very contemporary in style and there are small hints at the past but at the end of the day, the car is just another model for the same market. The Capri we all know and love is more than that.

We saw a similar situation with the new Puma. We let Ford transform the little machine into an SUV, but unlike the new Puma, there's growing discontent with this so-called new Capri.

The original Capri made a significant impact when it was released in the 60s. It captured the imagination of many petrolheads, brought a new driving experience, and it was just so damn cool!

Just listen to their recent advert for the new model:

"A ruler on a racetrack"

"Stuntman’s stunt car of choice"

"Legends never die"

Yes, the Capri was all that, but this SUV is far from it. Another school-run SUV in an increasingly crowded market of characterless, emotionless cars.

Give it a new name and you can keep it, FORD UK.
